# Socratic by Google

> Socratic by Google is a free homework help app for students. Take a photo of a question or type it out, and Socratic uses AI to find the best online resources and provide step-by-step visual explanations.

Socratic is Google's AI-powered homework help application for high school and university students. It uses Google's AI technology to understand questions across subjects and surfaces the best explanations, visual guides, and resources to help students understand — rather than just giving answers. The app works in two ways: students can take a photo of a textbook question, handwritten problem, or printed worksheet and Socratic recognizes and interprets the question using computer vision. Or they can type questions in natural language across math, science, history, English, and more. For math problems, Socratic provides step-by-step solution breakdowns with explanations for each step. For science and history questions, it curates explanations from reputable sources and generates summaries. For English literature, it explains themes, characters, and quotes. Socratic's visual explanations use diagrams, charts, and illustrated breakdowns that make abstract concepts concrete. The app recognizes that different students learn differently and presents multiple explanation formats for each topic. Being free, available on iOS and Android, and backed by Google's AI and search capabilities, Socratic is one of the most accessible homework help tools for students worldwide — particularly valuable in educational contexts where professional tutoring is financially inaccessible.
