Llama 3 is Meta's landmark open-source LLM family — available in 8B, 70B, and 405B parameter sizes — that delivered GPT-4-class performance as a freely available open-weight model and catalyzed the open-source AI ecosystem. It supports strong coding, reasoning, and multilingual capability under a commercial license and remains foundational for the vast ecosystem of fine-tunes, local deployments, and applications built on it. Meta has since released Llama 4 (April 2025), the next generation featuring natively multimodal MoE models: Llama 4 Scout (17B active params, 16 experts, 10M-token context window, 200 languages) and Llama 4 Maverick (17B active params, 128 experts, ~1M context). Llama 3 continues in widespread use via Ollama, LM Studio, and API providers worldwide.
